The doctor will not see now

 Today sees the screening of the final ever episode of BBC 1 daytime soap Doctor's. She to a combination of budget cuts and calling ratings. The show gave early breaks to such stars as Emila Clarke, Nicholas Hoult and future Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne. And now the surgery is closed.

 The death has been announced of the actor Timothy West.  West had a long and acclaimed stage career. His cinema credits included The Day of the Jackal. On TV he had a wide range of credits including  a  memorable episode of Tales of the Unexpected titled Royal Jelly.

Not for me

 Tonight on BBC 1 sees the start of Wolf Hall, the series based on the prize winning novels of Hilary Mantel. The series produced has engaged in a war of words with the producer of the screen version Jilly Cooper's  Rivals. The latter complaing abouts how hard it was to make Rivals during to snobbery. The Wolf Hall Producer saying he would never make anything like Rivals. Point proved?

 The death has been announced of Kenneth Cope. Best known for a ghostly private dectecvie in Randall and Hopkirk (decased). His other TV work included Conoration Street, Minder and Bergerac. On the big screen he appeared in an  number of Carry on films.

After the bell

 Today is General Election day in the UK. Voting stops at 10 pm. TV  channels will then broadcast an exit poll that will make a forecast of the forthcoming result. However there are Times when the pool base been wrong. In 1992 it predicted that there would be an hung parliament but instead there was as Conservative majority. We just have to see what tonight brings.

 It has been announced that John Nettles will not be doing a cameo appearance in the new version of Bergerac. The show that ran from 1981to 1991 is being rebooted by UKTV. Unlike the original this version rather being made in Jersey but in Devon.

Donald's starting points

 The sad news of the death of the actor Donald Sutherland has seen artic!as that focus on his cinema work with such  diverse films as The Dirty Dozen, National Lampoon's Animal House and Ordinary People. It is easy to forget that most of his early career was spent in the UK. He did some TV work. Here are two examples. The Avengers episode The Superlative Seven has  Donald playing a deadly game with a group of killers including Charlotte Rampling as a female gunslinger and Brian as a master of killing. He is also appeared in The Saint episode Escape Route which was directed by the ship's star Roger Moore, it also featured Jean Marsh who Sutherland to go appear in the  film The Eagle Has  Landed.

Willam Russell (1924-2024)

 The death has announced of William Russell who played the role of Ian Chesterton, one of the first compinons in Doctor Who. Other TV shows he appeared on include Coronation Street, Robin of Sherwood and The Professionals. Films William worked on included The Great Escape and Superman: The Motion Picture.

 Last night was the final episode to feature Derek Thompson as staff nurse Charlie Fairhead. In the episode Charlie was stabbed by a patient and was left battling for his life. However Charlie pulled through and retired from nursing.

Tasmin's first brush with crime

 Currently on the Paramount+ streaming service is the prequel to the film Sexy Beast. The film featured an Oscar nominated by Ben Kingsley as Don Logan, a criminal with a hair trigger temper. In the series Don's sister is by Tasmin Greig. Her better known TV work comes from comedy shows like Black Books, Green Wing and Friday Night Dinner. In one episode of Black Books entitled The Fixed Tasmi's character Fran develops a forceful personality from working in an office. This comes when her pals Bernard (Dylan Moran) and Manny (Bill Baily) are having to teach a violent crook how to read.  Good preparation for what was to come.

Book review: Shadow Network by Tony Kent

 Tony Kent brings us Joe Dempsie, a former British special forces operator now member of a United Nations group investigating war crimes. When a mass shooting in The Gauge sees a witness for a trial  to the run Dempsie and his fellow agents are brought in to track him down with another agent on the trail of the wife of the witness. There are a great many action scenes such as a helicopter attack. Some reader's might take offence to the idea main villain The Monk having a hand in real life events. To sum it a most enjoyable read.

Michael Jayston (1935-2024)

 The death has been announced of Michael Jayston. The actor had a wide range of credits. On film he  played Russian Tsar Nicholas II in Nicholas and Alexandra, other films he appeared in include Cromwell and Zulu Dawn. On TV Michael played MI6 agent Peter Guillam in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and he played the Valeyard an evil version of The Doctor in Doctor Who. Other TV credits included Only Fools and Horses and Tales of the Unexpected. Michael played James Bond in a radio version of You Only Live Twice.
