TV Review - This Time with Alan Partidge

Starring Steve Coogan, Susannah Fielding

BBC1 9:30PM Monday

Staging the most remarkable comeback (both accidentally shooting dead a chat show guest and punching a BBC exec on live TV) Alan Partidge fills in for a sick host on an One Show copycat. As ever with Alan things do not go well, mispronouncing guests names, blundering through technical demonstrations and making legal action worthy statements. Steve Coogan as Alan is as always on the top of his game. One particular highlight (or low light depending on your point of view) is when Alan demonstrates how to wipe your bottom without using your hands. Alan is back and in that awful way we all love.

2019 Oscars results

This year's winner of the grand prize of Best Picture was Green Book, the story of an African-American classical pianist and his white chauffeur. Mahersala Ali who played the role of the pianist won Best Supporting Actor. The film that took away the most awards on the night was Rock bio-pic Bohemian Rhapsody with star Rami Malek taking Best Actor for his portrayal as Freddie Mercuray. The biggest shock of the night came when Olivia Colman won Best Actress for her role in The Favourite beating Glenn Close who some reckon would win an elusive Oscar for the film The Wife. The Oscars as ever have given a lot of talking points for years to come.

Scotland the brave?

Tonight see the start of the broadcast of the new BBC Scotland channel. Broadcasting between 7PM and midnight, the new channel will offer a mix of entertainment and factual with the one high light being the premiere screening of the last series of popular sit com Still Game. Bosses of the new channel will be hoping it will last a lot longer than the last attempt to appeal to Scot's audience. Last from April 2017 to July 2018 STV2 showed a mix of new programming and repeats of famous STV shows Taggart and Take the High Road. However as the brief time span suggest viewers did not take to the channel. We will just have to see if BBC Scotland channel does any better.

TV Review - Curfew

Sky 1 9PM Friday

Starring Sean Bean, Miranda Richardson and Billy Zane

Curfew is set in a future UK where a virus has devastated the country leaving victims as either ferile creatures or light fearing hence a curfew (and the title) during the night. The show wears it's many influences up front, the main one being I Am Legend. The first episode was more of a scene setter as we get know to some of the characters. Though there are some bouts of action in particular a well put together car chase. However what was supposed to be a jump scare is ruined by the fact that it was in the promo. Of the performers newcomer Phobe Fox impresses the most in the role of an ambulance driver with personal reasons to compete in the all night race. Sean Bean chews the scenery as a crime boss, Miranda Richardson has only one brief scene where she puts on her seat!. While Billy Zane does not appear in the first episode at all! The rest of Curfew's ensures a must watch with it's mix high speed thrills and chills.

The legacy of The Monees

The death of Peter Tork serves to remind the somewhat extraordinary tale of how the first manufactured band came to be. Tork with Mickey Dolenz Davy Jones and Micheal Neasmith played members of an American (even though Jones was from the UK) wannabe version of The Beatles. Each episode detailed the band's zany adventures sountracked to their songs. Later in 1968 there was a film starring them and directed by one of the shows creators Bob Rafelson. However Head was no extended episode but was more in with the counter culture movement with the cast including 2 actors who starred in the ultimate counter culture film Easy Rider Jack Nicholson and Dennis Hopper. Head flopped and The Monkees fell out of flavour. However Rafelson would go on to an acclaimed career as film director earning Oscar nominations for Five Easy Pieces which starred Nicholson. For those who dismissed The Monkees as joke act they should look at who they associated with.

No more binging?

Since last year the BBC have put out an number of TV programmes as on line box sets. However there is signs that could be changing.. The next series of acerbic comedy Fleabag will see it's second series go out on a broadcast weekly basis after it's debut run went on the on-line only BBC3 as a full immediate so that would be viewers could all the episodes in one go. Is this a sign that binge watching culture is on the wane?
Awful quiz show answer of the day 21-02-2019

On today's Tipping Point a contestant was asked the question in which country of the UK does Motherwell Football Club play. The contestant answered England. The answer as everyone knows the answer is Scotland. And I should declare I live in and support Motherwell.
Not seen at the Brits

Yesterday I detailed the infamous farce of the 1989 Brit awards that led to it being shown on live TV for 18 years. Here are a couple of examples missed because of this situation.

Don't give peace a chance

In 1991 US led force were preparing to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwait. That year's winner of Best British Female artist Lisa Stansfield made an compassionate plea for peace at the event. However when it was broadcast the next night

An naughty boy called Jarvis

In 1996 Micheal Jackson preformed his No 1 hit Earth Song. The performance had Jackson cast in the role of messiah figure helping troubled people. One person who was not impressed with was Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker who invaded the stage and mooned at Jackson with his trousers still on. Cocker was not invited back the until 2997.

Remembering the 1989 Brit awards

Tomorrow night sees this year's Brit awards being held. This is the event that sees the British music industry laud those acts that have made an impression in the last year. It is also 30 years since the most infamous edition of the event was held. Hosted by diminutive glamour model turned pop star Samantha Fox and Fleetwood Mac legend (and very tall) Mick Fleetwood. Events started with Fleetwood using Fox's microphones whilst she tried to jump up to use his. Fox announced that Soul legends The Four Top would be presenting an award however out came (and by himself) Boy George. Radio 1 DJ Gary Davies then came out with Rolling Stones members Bill Wyman and Ronnie Wood to present Best British newcomer, after a piece of VT announcing the contenders failed to play Wood gave up waiting and announced Bros as the winners. A filmed acceptance speech by Michael Jackson for winning Best International Male Solo artist failed to play. Kenneth Baker then a cabinet minister in the Conservative government of the time was booed by the audience when he was introduced leading to Cliff Richard admonish them. Though Baker can count himself luckily as at the 1997 event John Prescott had a bucket of water thrown over him by a member of Alternative music group Chumwamba. Despite the gaffes (or because of them) the event finished ahead of schedule. For the following 18 years the Brits did not go out live on TV. The question is will any such events happen this year?

No moment of glory

This year's Oscars already having to became the first host less in 30 years now have attracted headlines again for the wrong reasons. In an effort to keep the cermonary running on time some awards will not be shown during the telecast. An number of notable figures in cinema including Martin Sorese and Spike Lee have signed a letter decrying the omission of the likes of cinmeatopgrapy and editing are just as impotent to film making as the showier acting categories. Weather the organisers take any not remains to be seen.

Radio up and downs

Greg James will be celebrating that over 2 hundred thousand new listeners have tuned into the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast since he took the DJ chair last year. However things were not quite as good as for the station as a whole as it dropped 3 hundred listeners to an overall total just over 9 million. Meanwhile BBC Radio 5 Live was overtaken LBC in the news station field.

Hawking your wares

In the last week a couple of adverts made by ITV has started airing on rival stations. Both feature characters from 2 the station's most popular shows. One has Roger Allam in his role in the Inspector Morse prequel Endeavour. The advert suggests that things will not go well for Fred in the upcoming series. The other is for the titular character Vera as played by Brenda Bleythen and it underlines why I have never seen an episode of that show. The droning voice and superior attitude only remain why I do not watch the show. So of the 2 adverts one works while the other is a complete failure.
