The legacy of The Monees
The death of Peter Tork serves to remind the somewhat extraordinary tale of how the first manufactured band came to be. Tork with Mickey Dolenz Davy Jones and Micheal Neasmith played members of an American (even though Jones was from the UK) wannabe version of The Beatles. Each episode detailed the band's zany adventures sountracked to their songs. Later in 1968 there was a film starring them and directed by one of the shows creators Bob Rafelson. However Head was no extended episode but was more in with the counter culture movement with the cast including 2 actors who starred in the ultimate counter culture film Easy Rider Jack Nicholson and Dennis Hopper. Head flopped and The Monkees fell out of flavour. However Rafelson would go on to an acclaimed career as film director earning Oscar nominations for Five Easy Pieces which starred Nicholson. For those who dismissed The Monkees as joke act they should look at who they associated with.
