When Lee went for dinner

 The recent death of novelist Anne Rice brings to mind the fuss  she caused over the casting of Tom Cruise in the film version of A Interview with a Vampire. On YouTube you can find a video of Lee Child talking about how he was was invited to the most expensive restaurant in New York by film producers he knew he was going to be told that his famed creation Jack Reacher would be played by Cruise,and he was right.

 It was a bad night for ITV. The final of I'm a Celebrity Get me out of Here was seen by a disappointing figure of 6.5 million viewers. New talent show Walk the Line was seen by just by 3 million viewers. 

Eamon gets an new job

 It has been announced that Eamon Holmes is joining GB News. Eamon starts in the new year.

TV ratings 05-12-2021

 The final episode of Doctor Who: Flux was seen by 3.58 million viewers. There are now just three episodes remaining of the Whitaker and Chibnall era.

A proper Jack

 A promo has been released for Amazon Prime Reacher series. The latest screen version of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels. The star of the show Alan  Ritchson has one going for him over big screen predecessor Tom Cruise in that he looks like the character as described described on the page.

Richard is out of the castle

 Richard Madely is out of this year's I'm a Celebrity Get me out of Here. He fell ill after doing a task that had going down a sewer and having rotten vegetables dumped on him.He was taken to hospital for treatment, but because of pandemic safety rules he can not go back to the castle where the show is being staged.

The master is back

 Last night saw the return of Gamesmaster. Without doubt the most famous show about video games. It was back with challenges but an new presented in the form of Robert Florence. The titular overlord has taken on the form of Trevor Macdonald.

Andrew is leaving

 It has been announced that Andrew Marr is leading the BBC. For the last 16 years he has presented a Sunday morning show on politics. He is joining the Global media group, where he will have shows on both LBC Radio and Classic FM. No word if Andrew will be replaced at all.

 Starting tonight on BBC1 is Outlaws. Among the cast is Christopher Walkenbest known for such as his intense Oscar winning part in The Deer Hunter and as bad guy Max Zorion in Bond film A View To a Kill. This is not the first time he has worked for the BBC, in 2024 he appeared in the thriller Turks & Caicos.

The latest attempt

 The BBC has announced that a team headed by popular singer Dua Lips will choose the UK entry for next year's Eurovision song contest. Will it do any better than this year effort remains to be seen.

Back to Jersey

 The BBC have released hundreds of photos detailing the making of Bergerac. The show that makes John Nettles a household name and sparked a tourism boom on the island of Jersey. An early episode of the show has been and will shown at a special screening.

Watch your back Jack

 This year saw Line of Duty post the highest ratings for a drama since 1999. The show that had that Honour was A Touch of Frost. This rather ironic as the main characters in Line of Duty would probley investigate D I Jack Frost for his methods which includes planting evidence.

A new start

 Tonight's run of Top of the Pops repeats reaches a bit of milestone. It marks the end when Radio One DJs were used as the main pool for presenters. For the next 2 and a half years the show was presented by unknowns.  But the DJs returned taking turns with celebs.

Victor's back from the grave

 Tonight on BBC4 a repeat run of One Foot in the Grave starts. Starring Richard Wilson as forcibly retired Victor Meldrew. Each episode sees Victor rail against the modern world while his long suffering wife Margaret (played by Annette Crosbie) listens on. Featuring scenes of surreal humour such as a lorry load of garden gnomes being machine gunned. But also rather grim moments like Victor seeing care home residents being abused by the staff. The show ran for ten years from 1990 picking up many awards along the way tonight you can remind yourself why.

Bradley overload

 Tonight Bradley Walsh will be on BBC1 and ITV at the same time. For the former he will be presenting an New version of Blankty Blank and while for the latter he will be presenting The Chase spin off Beat the Chasers. And there is more Bradley to come as he stars in an new version of The Darling Buds of May entitled The Larkins.

Because of Jeremy?

 Next Monday will see quiz show Eggheads move to Channel 5. Though you have to ask why as in it's last few years on BBC2 have seen flagging ratings. Is it because Eggheads host Jeremy Vine also Channel 5's morning  discussion show.

Steve becomes a true monster

 It has been announced that Steve Coogan will play Jimmy Saville in an new BBC1 drama called the reckoning. It will focus on the rise to fame of Saville and the revelations after his death of the terrible crimes he committed. The Reckoning will be a greener next year.

Russell returns

 In a sensational piece of news it has been announced that Russell T Davies is to return as showrunner for Doctor Who. With ratings sliding under Chris Chibnall management the BBC have turned to the man who brought the show back in a blaze of glory. More news to come. 

Return to Waterloo

 The BBC has announced that after 6 years off TV screens school drama Waterloo Road is to return. Although set in the Greater Manchester area, the final series saw the titular school moved to Scotland! No news where the new series will be set.

John Challis (1942-2021)

 The death has been announced of John Challis. Best known as dodgy car sales man Boycie in Only Fools and Horses. His early career was him play bad guys in the likes of The Sweeney and Doctor Who. An early comedy role was Open All Hours which saw him working with David Jason before Only Fools and Horses a. Boycie would get his own spin off with The Green Green Grass which was inspired by Challis own job to the Welsh borders.

 Matt Berry was interviewed by David Hepworth and Chris Ellen for their Word in Your Attic YouTube channel. Matt describes scoring the music for a fight scene in the forthcoming Toast of London. We should expect the same brand of mayhem.

 t the National Television Awards Ant and Dec win as always. One person not impressed was Piers Morgan who posted as a meme him storming off the set of Good Morning Britain.

What an upset

 Tonight the National Television Awards are held tonight. Perhaps the most predictable, Ant and Dec win something every year. However in 2011 school drama caused an uproar by beating both Doctor Who and Sherlock to win the drama award.

A new Question.

 Starting tonight is an New series of A Question of Sport. With an New host in the form of Paddy McGuinness and a lot changes to the show format. It does not have an easy start as it faces the second of the night's Coronation Street episodes.

 When streaming service BritBox was launched magazine Sight & Sound was rather dismissive of the fat it seemed too upmarket. Well that changed in recent weeks with the addition of Infamous Euro soap Eldorado and trashy drama Footballers Wives.

Still hunted

 A recent addition to the BritBox streaming service is is Hunted. Starring Melissa George, it is a tale of intrigue concerning freelance spies. It was meant to run for many series but ended after one leaving many plot threads unresolved.

Flat life

 The death has been announced of Sean Lock. A regular in various comedy panel shows. In the early 2000s Lock starred in 15 Storeys High a comedy about life in a tower block. In one episode Sean's character is found guilty of killing one of the Queen Swans. His punishment is to stand in stocks and have rotting vegetables thrown at him!

Una Stubbs (1937-2021)

 The death has been announced of Una Stubbs. One of Britain's grand ladies of show business. She started her career as a dancer before finding fame starring in a series of films with Cliff Richard including Summer Holiday. How played the daughter of the loud mouth Alf Garrnett in Till Death Us Apart. In children's favourite Worzel Gummindge she played Aunt Sally. In recent years her biggest was as Mrs Hudson in Sherlock. Other TV shows How appeared included both Eastenders and Fawlty Towers.

Sleeper war

 Jed Mecurio is without doubt one of the most successful names in British TV, penning dramas like Line of Duty and Bodyguard. However he may be locked in battle against one of Hollywood's biggest studios. He's has just published a graphic novel called Sleeper, however this has put him in the crosshairs of Warner Brothers whose DC Comics in the early 2000s out a series of the same name. Warner Brothers have made attempts to turn their series into a film with names like Tom Cruise and Ben Affleck attached. A lot of people will be looking on.

ITV have announced it's axed X-Factor. The Simon Cowell production has produced many stars. But in recent years ratings been falling so it's time was numbered

Jodie and Chris are gone

 It has been announced that both Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall are leaving Doctor Who. Their time on the show has been the most controversial of recent years. There will be a full series this year with 3 specials marking the end of their time on the show.

A correction

 In my last blog I had said that ex BBC1 controller Danny Cohen gave one of the reasons he Rome cop show Zen was that they were too many white cops shows. What he did say was that were too many make detective shows. Though that has hardly changed.

The wrong colour

 Just added to the BritBox streaming service is the Rome based cop show Zen. Starring Rufus Swell it ran for a single series in 2011. Then BBC1 controller Danny  Cohen gave one reason for it's as they were too many white cops on TV. Nothing has changed Danny.

 With the postponed 2020 Olympics about to start, a couple of news stories have come out . The first is that Brisbane has been announced as the host of the 2032 games. The third time Australia has held the games. In other news British Shooter Amber Hill has pulled out due to a positive covid test. Bill was a bit medal hope.

 In a battle of crime dramas BBC1 Baptise which features award winning actress Fiona Shaw in the cast claimed 4.4 million viewers. Professor T starring Ben Miller on ITV was seen by 2.8 million viewers.

A monk returns

 Next Monday ITV 4 will begin a repeat run of Cadfael. The show was based on the novels of Ellis Peters and starred Derek Jacobi in the title role of a crime solving monk. Unlikely care for a channel more known for tough guy fare like The Professionals.

 The TV schedules have been going through a fouled time, thanks to sports events currently going on. First the European Football Championship has displaced many programs from their usual spot.  England will play Germany in the next round of the European Football Championship. It is one of the longest running rivalries in Football. BBC1 will get huge  ratings when they cover the match next Tuesday.

 With both England and Wales getting through to the next round of the European Football Championship the BBC with first pick of second round matches. Wales are already to play Denmark but England will have to wait to see who they play.

Best of Friday Night Dinner

 The comedy about a Jewish family, mum Jackie (Tasmin Greig)  dad Martin (Paul Ritter) and forever bickering sons Adam (Simon Bird) and Jonny (Tom Rosenthal) and their chaotic attempts to have traditional dinners not help by weird neighbour Jim played by Mark Heap. These are the 10 best episodes.

1. Mr Morris

Gran has an New boyfriend who is not a very easy going person. As the evening goes from bad to worse the family finds themsleves locked out of the house.

2. Mercedes

It is Adam's birthday and after getting a rather tasteless present from his dad finds his mum can't cook dinner. So the family goes to a Chinese restaurant where they come across an old girl friend of Martin's  who always talks about her Mercedes.

3. Mr Morris Return

the troublesome Mr Morris has made up with Grandma. He proposes marriage to her to the horror of Jackie. They then go to the local 10 pin bowling alley where Jim is there dressed in a Dog with his own addition.

4. The New Car

Jonny has been given a promotion at work and with it an new car. But an embarrassing phone call reveal that it may not have legitimate reasons

5. The Anniversary

It is Martin and Jackie's  anniversary but Jonny has a couple of secrets. Then Jim turns up having accidentally taken his dog's sleeping pills.

6. Christmas

Grandma and horrible Grandma have come for Xmas. Though the latter has brought their own dinner.

7. The Fox

the boys were discover that their dad has been keeping the body of a dead fox. What then follows is a desperate attempt to stop Jackie discovering it.

8. The Loft

Martin and Jackie are having and the boys try to discover why. Meanwhile Jonny Daley claims to have broken his arm to get out of cleaning the  loft.

9. The Funeral

Martin's uncle has died and horrible Grandma wants him to do a reading. But as always things go wrong especially when Jim turns up.

10. The Sofa bed

The first ebutpisode of the show. Martin is giving away a sofa bed but between the boys bickering and the man supposed to take away the sofa bed getting bad news. Things do not go to plan.

Going down the river?

This Friday the delayed 2020 European Football Championship starts. One of the most eagerly awaited games sees Scotland take on England. The match is being shown on ITV. 

In BBC ONE Scotland schedule at the same is Scots soap River City. Not a great time for the soap.

Trouble for enders

The soaps once posted huge ratings. But times have changed. Eastenders for example nowadays gets 4 million viewers is even beaten by satire show Have I got news for You. Given the recent fate of Holby City soap watchers will be concerned about their favourite show.

No more going to the city

 It has been announced that BBC medical soap Holby City has been axed. The spin off of Casualty started in 1999. Ratings for the show have been on the decline hence the announcement. The show will still be on screen until March next year.

 Coronation Street was one of it's lowest over night ratings. In an of place slot it was watched by 2 and a half million viewers. The Masked Dancer the reason for the move hardly did any better.

The Lion has been brought

 Famed movie studio MGM has been brought the giant Amazon corporation. The studio output includes the James Bond films. Not included are the rights to such classics as The Wizard of Oz as they are held by Warner Brothers. Many people are interested to see what happens next.

 The Brit awards ceremony only gained 2.9 million vi. As I wrote in my piece yesterday pop and rock music has now become a fringe interest.

 The Brit awards are on tonight. But given how music consumption has no changed so much will anyone watch?

 Marvel Studios have announced a raft of new films. Without a doubt the most keenly awaited is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The first Black Panther film grossed over a million dollars worldwide. However star Chadwick Boseman died from cancer. Studio heads have made it clear that Boseman's role would not be recast. The new film is due next year.

No rest on a Sunday

 The All England club has announced that the traditional middle Sunday rest day will be scrapped from 2022. There had been four years when play had to be held on the middle Sunday, 1991,1997,2004 and 2016. Some will be glad of the change, others not.

 The latest episode of Line of Duty became the most watched piece of a scripted UK TV drama for 13 years. Posting figures of 10.9 million viewers. Only Xmas 2008 Xmas day Special of Doctor Who can a British TV drama claim ratings of above 11 million viewers.

The long shot

 Tonight's episode of Line of Duty will feature an interrogation scene that lasts for 29 minutes. The BBC ONE drama about police corruption gets viewing figures that are hardly seen these days.

Fan fury

 Plans to a an new European Football super league has incurred the fury of. English, Italian and Spanish clubs had announced the plans a couple of days ago. We just have to see if anything comes of it.

 The death has been announced of Helen McCorary. An actress  with a career that spanned stage and screen. In recent years her role in period crime drama Peaky Blinders was a huge favourite with the public. Film roles include The Queen, Skyfall and the Harry Potter series.

 Famed writer Lynda La Plante has said crime dramas like Line of Duty are not realistic. But when you look at Lynda's own work her views do not stand up. In 2 different series (The Commander and Above Suspicion) female police officers act as honey traps for murder suspects. While Trial and Retribution another goes undercover at a S&M club. Lot calling kettle black Lynda?

 The death has been announced of the actor Paul Ritter. Best known for his starring role in the sit com Friday Night Dinner in which he played larger than life dad Martin. His other TV work included Vera and The Last Kingdom. His film work included Quantum of Solace and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

 Dragon's Den made it's debut on BBC1. Faced with tough competition from a hour long episode of Coronation Street it was watched by 2.8 million viewers. From now it's first half hour will face Emmerdale.

 It has been announced that BBC4 will now will be mainly repeats. The channel became famous for such original output as the political satire The Thick of It. Now the channel schedule will be made up of repeats though events such as BBC Young Musician of the Year will stay on the channel.

Parky in his shed

 The BBC has announced that Michael Parkinson will present a retrospective of his chat show career. This is not the first time he has done one. In 1994 he presented one. It was made in very unusual circumstances. Michael recorded links sitting in front of a black sheet in his garden shed! Weather Michael has to such measures again remains to be seen.

New quiz master

 Clive Myrhie y has been announced as the new host of Mastermind. He will take over from John Humphrey who has presented the show since it came back to the BBC in 2003.

 Officials have banned overseas visitors from the Olympics.

 The BBC has announced that an number of departments will make a move away from London. The most notable being Radio 3 which is going t to Salford. Eastenders will be joined by 2 New long running dramas.

End of Eve

 It has been announced that  fourth series of Killing Eve will be it's last. The darkly comic take of a Russian killer has won many awards. Especially for star Jodie Cormer. The next series should go out next year.

Murray Walker (1923-2021)

 One of the great voices of Sport commentary has passed away. Murray Walker who for many was an essential part of Motor racing. His work with James Hunt was a highlight. Much mocked but still loved.

 It has been announced that quiz show Eggheads is moving from the BBC to Channel 5. The show which started in 2003 that sees  team of quizzing superstars take on comparative beginners. No news of current host Jeremy Vine ripping the role.

Piers quits

 Piers Morgan has quit ITV breakfast show Good Morning Britain following extreme disagreements with fellow presenters over the rebel royal interview Morgan's departure will be a crushing blow to the show as his presence gave it a huge talking point.

Game back on

 Just added to the Britbox  streaming service is mid nineteen nineties sit com Game On. Starring Samantha (as she was then) Janus, Matthew Cottle and for the first series only before he tried to break into Hollywood Ben Chaplin. The show could be considered the British answer to.Friends but it had more edgy humour. One of the curious facts of the show was that it was co-write who was known for Prestige dramas like the 1995 version of Price and Prejudice which came out in the same year as the first series of Game On.

 In a sign of these new productions starved times Channel 5 had the most watched programme at 9 pm last night. Will it's fortunes continue?

A like minds

 Yesterday on two completely different quiz shows the same question was asked. On both Tipping Point and Mastermind contestants were asked which cartoon mouse did Gene Kelly dance with in the film Anchors Away. The answer given both times was Mickey Mouse. The correct answer is Jerry.

 In years past game shows used to be presented by entertainers like Bruce Forsyth and Bob Monkhouse. Nowadays they seem to come from all fields. Tonight Gordon Ramsay joins fellow chef Gino do Campo in hosting (Family Fortunes) one. Tonight Gordon Ramsay 's Bank Balance starts. We just have to see if Gordon proves to be popular as Gino.

 The last edition of Who Wants to be a Millionaire was 2 winners o £125,000. Though it has to be said that most contestants had a lack of knowledge problem.

 It has been announced that Anne Robinson is the new host of Countdown. Anne of course is famous for hosting another game show  The Weakest Link.

The return of Toast

 It has been announced that Matt Berry is to return as his most famous character failed actor Steven Toast. The new series will see Toast make it in Hollywood. Unlike the previous series which went out on Channel four this series will go out on BBC one.

 Donald rump is out of another body. This time it is the Screen Actors Guild. Trump qualified through appearing in films like Home Alone 2 and Zoolader. After the recent attack on the Capitol Trump was being looked into by the guild but  Trump quit with a defiant who cares.

 The title of the fourth Matrix film may have been revealed. A free member has suggested the title is Matrix Resurrection. Given that main characters Neo and Trinity seemed to did in the third film this is no surprise.

 The pandemic has claimed another TV production victim. Britain's Got Talent has been postponed for this year due to safety concerns. Losing one of British TV titles is a massive blow to ITV.

 On lady's night edition of Who Wants to be a Millionaire they were 2 contestants. One only won a thousand pounds after saying that 4 time Olympic long jump champion Carl Lewis. The other would win in contrast 64 thousand pounds.

 After No Time to Die was moved to October more films were pushed back. Will we ever see the inside of cinemas?
