The power of the Panther

Black Panther the new Marvel Studios is proving to be massive success. After just 2 weeks on release the film has made $700 million dollars. To say this unbelievable consider the previous obscure level recognition to the character is a massive understatement of the highest order. The character could have seen in cinemas in the mid 1990's with Wesley Snipes playing the character however disagreement with the would be director saw those plans put on ice. Snipes did however go on to star as another Marvel character the vampire hunter Blade in 3 films.

Awkward Charlie

In 1986 a special edition of (Old Grey) Whistle Test was devoted to The Rolling Stones as they filmed a promo for the song One Hit to the Body. Host David Hepworth interviews drummer Charlie Watts in what could be called be a rather testy interview. The interview took place during what Watts has admitted a mid life crisis of drink and drugs addiction. When Hepworth asks about Watts Big Band side project he calls self indulgence. Watts then bemoans the promo making process as mainly sitting around doing noting but then he concludes that pretty much sums up his time with The Stones eliciting a large laugh from Hepworth.

You can see the interview on Youtube.

The most costly wardrobe malfunction

In will be one of the most talked about moments of this year's Winter Olympics the Ice Dancing Gold medal was won by just under a point. The drama surrounds the moment when France's Gabriella Papadakis blouse top came undone thereby hindering her and partner Guillaume Cizeron performance in the Short Programme. They were trailing Canada Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir by 2 points. Although they won the free programme the French pair had to make do with the Silver medal. Never has a sporting contest been settled by something so trivial.

The best laid plans of Phil

This past week saw the 40th anniversary of the broadcast of the first episode of Grange Hill the BBC's children's drama. Set in the titular school the show broke new ground in dealing with such subject as drug abuse and racism that would have been considered risque a couple of years before the show started for a programme aimed at a certain age range. Many well known actors got early roles on the show including Todd Carty, Susan Tully and Alex Kingston. Due to production being based in London the show was thought  to be set in London hence most of the voices heard were from London with the off exception like the Liverpudlian Ziggy Graves. Then in 2003 the BBC handed over production to series creator Phil Redmond who in the intervening years had created the long running C4 soap Brookside. One of the first things Redmond did was to move production to Liverpool and set Grange Hill in an non specific area of the country with a wide range of accents. However Redmond's plans were waylaid by British Child Employment Law which had the effect that Redmond had to cast Child actors from the surrounding area thereby the show cast now mostly had accents from the North West of England. Grange Hill came to an end in 2008 with the BBC saying that the show had run it's course. The final episode featured a guest appearance by Carty. Some of the sets built for Grange Hill for it's Liverpool move would be ended being used for Redmond's other show Hollyoaks. It is testament to the impact it had on a generation of kids that Grange Hill is still being talked about 10 years after it ended.

Morse roads

in an upcoming episode of Endeavour will feature the future Inspector Morse checking into n a road side motel in the fictional town of Kings Oaks. This is a reference to Crossroads the somewhat derided soap opera. One of the main complaints being some what stodgy production values, one case being a piece of sound recording equipment dropping onto the studio floor though one of the actors picked and put it into a bag she was carrying. Crossroads came to an end after 24 years in 1988 a year after the first episode of Inspector Morse was broadcast. In 2001 there was a revival of Crossroads but that lasted only 2 years with the final scene being a character waking up from a dream that was basically the whole 2 years!

A few months after it was first reported the Trinity Mirror Group has bought all the various publications owned by Richard Desmond. One of the intriguing ways in that the takeover will affect those titles is in political out view, The Daily Express is known as one of the most right wing in terms in viewpoint. However there was a brief period under pre Desmond owner Lord Horlick that it was quite sympathetic towards the Labour Party. As the whole newspaper industry is facing trouble what happens next will be of great interest.

Who on Sunday

Press reports suggest that the next series of Doctor Who will be going out on Sunday as opposed to it's usual Saturday showing. The new series featuring the much discussed casting of Jodie Whitaker in the role of The Doctor is expected to air this Autumn. Some have suggested that the move is to give the show a fixed time because Saturdays are beholden to Strictly Come Dancing which has editions that vary in length. This is would not be the first time Doctor Who has not gone out on Saturday, Peter Davison time on the show saw it go out on weekdays as a way to see what would be the best slot for an new soap opera (Eastenders) and Sylvester McCoy had to face Coronation Street in a move seen by some as a ruse by unfriendly BBC management to justify it's axing. Many people are intrigued if this rumour is true.

TV-am 35 years on

This month marks 35 years since  TV-am aired. The station was launched with high hopes and some impressive names who not only had an in front of the camera interest but behind the scenes one as well. Beside from presenting David Frost, Michael Parkinson, Anglea Rippon and Anna Ford were also shareholders. However TV-am suffered the worst of starts for an number of reasons, low ad revenues due to a dispute with actors union Equity and then came the fact that the BBC launched their own breakfast before TV-am. Breakfast Time was initially thought to be either a morning version of late night hard news programme Newsnight, however it turned out to be more of a light magazine format. Another was that with the exception of main presenter Frank Brough was made of fresh faces like Selina Scott, Nick Ross, David Icke and Francis Wilson. TV-am was on the back foot and Frost was the only survivor of a cull. Under the direction of Greg Dyke TV-am became more popularist, new presenters Anne Diamond and Nick Owen read out bingo number, Chris Tarrant presented segments from the seaside and Roland Rat became a hit with the kids. Aussie tycoon who held a minority interest in TV-am brought in Bruce Gyngell to make it financially viable. To do this Gyngell made cuts and this included to news gathering this would become evident with the Brighton Hotel bombing. Whereas other news outlets had crews made up of large numbers TV-am had just one reporter (John Stapleton) reporting over a telephone line. TV-am nearly lost it's broadcasting licence over and it was only until Gyngell promised to invest more in news gathering that TV-am was saved. When an industrial dispute with technicians developed Gyngell had management operate cameras and showing repeats of Batman, Happy Days and Flipper. However Gyngell would prove to be the victor over the unions for which he gained the praise of Margaret Thatcher. However the end for TV-am would come with the ITV franchise auction of 1991. TV-am lost to the Sunrise consortium, Gyngell did not this laying down proclaiming that Sunrise would go bust within a couple of years and a few weeks after the loss he produced at a pubic press event a letter written by Margaret Thatcher herself expressing her sorrow for her Governments role for the introduction for the process that saw TV-am lose it's licence. Despite Gyngell's proclamations GMTV (the eventual broadcast name for Sunrise) would run for 14 years 4 more than TV-am. The studios where TV-am was broadcast from were sold to MTV Europe though it is used more for office space now. You whatever you may think of TV-am in terms of quality you can not say it was not a colourful chapter in British broadcasting history.

Mash Piers

Piers Morgan is as ever on the warpath again. This time he is going up against BBC2 satire show The Mash Report which did a very risque routine about Morgan's recent interview with the US President Donald Trump.  The show featured a drawing of Morgan performing a sex act on the President. Morgan took to Twitter to denounce the show however accompanying the Tweet he attached the offending drawing. The result being the picture was retweeted around the world. Piers if you reading (and you are most likely no to) this then is one vital lesson you should take in, think before you Tweet.

Is the binge worth it?

Requiem a 6 part chiller starts tonight on BBC1. For those who wish to take in all 6 episodes in the one go can do so as all episodes will be available on BBC I-player as the programme starts. This has been in operation for over a year. One of the first titles to get this treatment was the Peter Kay Sit Com despite this option being available the show posted strong ratings. However another show which had all it's episode released  current end of the World cop show Hard Sun despite being the creation of Luther Neil Cross has seen the embarrassment of being beaten by Through the Keyhole with Keith Lemon. The BBC are obviously responding to the growth of streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. Though this does currently look like the BBC cutting their throats in terms of ratings.
